Following its premiere at the 2026 Doc Edge Festival, Girls’ Flight Out is continuing to spark conversations about equitable healthcare access for remote communities.
Supported by Geneva Healthcare, the documentary follows wāhine from Rēkohu / the Chatham Islands as they travel to mainland Aotearoa for their biennial breast screening – a journey affectionately known as the “Boobie Trip”.
To hear more about the story behind the short film, listen to Kathryn Ryan’s recent interview on RNZ’s Nine to Noon with co-director Anna Pearson and Chatham Islands resident Jo McShane. Together, they discuss the inspiration behind the documentary, the realities of receiving healthcare in one of New Zealand’s most remote communities, and why equitable breast screening opportunities are so important.
At Geneva Healthcare, we’re proud to have supported Girls’ Flight Out and its powerful message about improving healthcare availability. The documentary shines a light on the experiences of wāhine in remote communities and reinforces the importance of ensuring everyone can receive the care they need, wherever they live. We hope it continues to inspire meaningful conversations about health equity and strengthening healthcare across Aotearoa.
